In it, we discussed issues concerning the unity and mission between both churches and the concerns and challenges. We shared work perspectives concerning our communities of faith and overseas. Given the recent escalation of violence in the Middle East, we decided, by unanimous vote, to express ourselves about it.

Almost a month ago, we witnessed horrific attacks on Israelis by Hamas, including the killing of people, the launching of thousands of missiles, and the taking and holding of hostages, most of whom are still held, and many of whose well-being cannot be determined. We are deeply troubled by these acts and pray for the victims’ families, as well as for the people who were taken, that they may be released unharmed.

Since then, we have watched as Israel has unleashed a barrage of airstrikes on the Palestinian people of Gaza; a denial of the delivery of food and water, medical supplies, and fuel; the displacement of a million Palestinians from their homes and communities; the amassing of military units prepared for a ground invasion; and the allowance of only a paltry supply of humanitarian aid to enter – not enough for the population of Gaza.

As the number of deaths and injuries rises in the thousands and the ranks of displaced people increase, we lament that violence and war have again become the chosen approach to address tension, conflict, and suffering. We know there is a better, more peaceful, and more just way. We understand that this is not the will of God, and pray to God – as we sing in the hymn – to “cure your children’s warring madness; bend our pride to your control.”

The way to Gaza today is still a wilderness road, separated as it is from other centers of Palestinian life – the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and beyond. It has been cut off by a blockade for sixteen years, creating an isolated and contained space where more than 2 million Palestinians live, most of whom are refugees from previous wars.

As we seek God’s justice in the Middle East – for Jews, Christians, Muslims, Israelis, and Palestinians – we affirm that halting the current violence with a cease-fire and providing some humanitarian relief is necessary but not enough. The core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be addressed for there to be justice. The dispute centers on issues of rights, land, and resources. We affirm that it is not a religious conflict, although we know religion is inherently part of the context. But our faith is a source of goodness where we draw strength, motivation, and inspiration to work for justice and peace.

When Philip heard what the Ethiopian eunuch was reading on that Gaza road, he recognized the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation, justice was denied him.” Philip proclaimed the good news of Christ to the Ethiopian, and he believed. The world’s powers could not overcome God’s power to offer hope to generations. We carry that hope with us, even amid such devastating violence, and we draw on that hope to act today in the tragedy of war.

We echo the words of the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches of Jerusalem, offering our prayers and support, which remain steadfast, and raising up our collective voices “as an impassioned chorus, calling for justice, peace, and the cessation of the suffering that has descended upon the people of Gaza, particularly those who are the most vulnerable.” May it be so.

THE JOINT COMMISSION

For the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Puerto Rico

For the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada

Rev.
